Questions people ask

How is import duty on a used car worked out in Zambia?

Vehicles 2 years old and over pay a fixed "specific duty" set by ZRA for the body type and engine size, with lower amounts for vehicles over 5 years old. It already includes customs duty, excise duty, VAT, the motor vehicle fee, the processing fee and the motor vehicle surtax. The carbon emission surtax is added on top.

What about cars under 2 years old?

They pay duty as a percentage of the vehicle's value instead of a fixed amount. Use ZRA's motor vehicle calculator or ask a clearing agent.

Are hybrids different?

Yes. ZRA's specific duty amounts do not apply to used hybrid vehicles.

Is this the final amount?

It is ZRA's published amount. Since 2025 the excise part rises each year with inflation, and clearing agents charge their own fees, so confirm with ZRA or your clearing agent before you buy.
