Questions people ask

How do Zambian treasury bills work?

You pay less than the face value now and receive the full face value when the bill matures (91, 182, 273 or 364 days). The difference is your interest. The Bank of Zambia sells them at auctions, usually every two weeks; you can bid through a commercial bank or broker.

What is the difference between the yield rate and the discount rate?

The yield is your return on the money you pay in; the discount rate is the discount as a share of the face value. BoZ publishes both. This calculator uses the yield, which is what you actually earn.

Is withholding tax deducted?

Interest on treasury bills is usually taxed at source at 15% for individuals. Change the rate if your bank tells you otherwise (some institutions are exempt).
