What is the tax-free threshold in South Africa for 2026/27?

R99,000 a year if you are under 65, R153,250 from 65 to 74, and R171,300 from 75. Below these you pay no income tax because the rebates cancel it out.

How does SARS work out PAYE?

Tax is calculated on your yearly taxable income using the 2027 tax year (1 March 2026 – 28 February 2027) bands, and then the primary rebate (R17,820) is subtracted, plus the secondary (R9,765) and tertiary (R3,249) rebates if you are 65 or 75 and older.

Are UIF, medical aid credits and retirement contributions included?

Not yet. This shows income tax after rebates only. UIF (1%), medical scheme fees tax credits and retirement fund deductions change the final amount on your payslip.
